Various ethnic groups within Nigeria have ancient customs and cultural rituals that employ performance as a means of expression. Consequently, the genesis of theater in Nigeria is intimately intertwined with these indigenous rituals and ceremonial practices.

The Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa ethnic groups, in particular, have cultivated distinctive forms of dramatic expression within the context of religious and societal functions. Pinpointing a precise date for the development of theater among these diverse groups is challenging due to the deeply rooted nature of these traditions.

Nonetheless, the Yoruba ethnic group is renowned for its vibrant theatrical heritage, exemplified by Yoruba masquerade practices such as “egungun” and “gelede” performances. Similarly, the Igbos and Hausas have their respective masquerade traditions. The Igbos feature masquerades like “Mmanwu” and “Agaba,” integral to their cultural manifestations. Despite perceptions of Hausa culture as being devoid of such traditions, the Hausas also had masquerades with distinct performance forms, including “dama” and “bororo.”

As the above is true of Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa, so it is true for other ethnic groups in Nigeria.

A common thread in these masquerade practices is the fusion of storytelling, poetic recitations, music, and dance, all serving to convey moral lessons, offer communal entertainment, and enrich Nigeria’s theatrical landscape. These cultural expressions involve intricate costumes, masks, motifs, and semiotic symbols imbued with meanings, including tributes to ancestors, reverence for spiritual entities, moral teachings, and social commentaries.

Across different regions of Nigeria, theatrical practices linked to masquerade traditions thrived at varying levels before the intrusion of colonialism. The colonial era introduced European theatrical traditions, gradually influencing Nigerian theater. While the spread of Wahhabi Islam limited theatrical development in Northern Nigeria, missionaries and colonial authorities introduced Western-style theaters in the South, fostering a blend of influences. The Church played a significant role in the promotion of theatrical practices during this period, particularly in Yorubaland.

With Nigeria’s attainment of independence in 1960, there was a resurgence of interest in indigenous theater as a means of preserving cultural heritage and addressing contemporary societal issues. Prominent playwrights like Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, and Chinua Achebe emerged during this era.

Nigerian theater has evolved over time, seamlessly integrating traditional and contemporary elements. This evolution has produced internationally acclaimed playwrights, actors, and directors, elevating Nigeria’s position in the global theater landscape. The history of theater practice in Nigeria is a testament to its deep roots in indigenous customs, intricately intertwined with cultural, religious, and societal facets. Hubert Ogunde: The Doyen of Nigeria Theater

Nigerian theater encompasses three primary themes: enchanting folktales, witty social critiques, and narratives deeply rooted in historical or mythological traditions passed down through oral storytelling. In a broader context, the written text and musical aspects of Nigerian theater have evolved through the amalgamation of religious liturgical elements from diverse sects.

Although numerous traveling theater companies exist in Nigeria, three professional troupes have notably risen to prominence: those led by Hubert Ogunde (celebrated for works such as “Yoruba Ronu” and “Journey to Heaven”), Kola Ogunmola (recognized for “The Palmwine Drinkard” and “Love of Money”), and Duro Ladipo (renowned for “Oba Koso” and “Eda”). Each of these troupes has cultivated a distinct artistic style, heavily influenced by the creative preferences of its founder. Typically, the founder assumes multiple roles, including playwright, producer, music arranger, and leading actor.

In the modern context of Nigerian theater, Hubert Ogunde holds a pivotal position in shaping the country’s theatrical landscape. Despite his prior occupation as a police officer, Ogunde left an indelible mark on the evolution of Nigeria’s theatrical tradition. In 1945, Hubert Ogunde established Nigeria’s inaugural professional touring theater company. Ogunde’s Legacies

The membership of his Theater Party included individuals from diverse ethnic groups, such as Igbos, Edo, Hausas, Ebira, Tiv, and more. Hubert Ogunde’s contributions to Nigerian theater were of profound consequence. He played an instrumental role in formalizing theater as an art form in Nigeria, addressing pressing societal issues, and democratizing theater for a broader audience. In 1947, Kola Ogunmola organized his students into an acting troupe, forming his own Theater Party. Ogunmola’s operas drew inspiration from Christian influences, often using biblical stories as the foundation for his plots. He skillfully incorporated folklore into his works through the utilization of praise poetry, proverbs, and incantations, as evidenced in his acclaimed adaptation of Amos Tutuola’s novel, “The Palm-Wine Drinkard.”

During the early 1960s, Duro Ladipo, a composer of church music with a dedication to preserving traditional arts, authored cultural plays rooted in historical material. While influenced by his predecessors, Ladipo introduced ceremonial elements like drumming, chanting, singing, and traditional costumes specific to historical or religious groups portrayed in his productions. Some of Ladipo’s actors possessed prior experience in religious rituals, which enriched the ceremonial aspects within a contemporary context.

Others who followed in the footsteps of Ogunde, Ogunmola, and Ladipo include notable figures like Oyin Adejobi, Ishola Ogunsola, Moses Olaiya (Baba Sala), Ade Afolaya (aka Ade-Love) among others. I distinctly recall a visit to the Town Hall in Oja-Akesan, Oyo, accompanied by my schoolmates and my uncle, David Okanlawon. During this visit, we watched Baba Sala’s “Mosebolatan,” which was perhaps one of the very last movies shown in Oyo Town before the decline of the old theater practice.

Alade Aromire: The Father of Nollywood

Just as Hubert Ogunde is recognized as the progenitor of Nigerian theater, Prince Muyideen Alade Aromire can similarly be described as the catalyst behind Nigeria’s Nollywood. This transformation was precipitated by economic challenges that intensified during the late 1970s and had devastating consequences, plunging Nigeria’s economy into a profound downturn by the mid-1980s. Among the sectors significantly affected, the film industry bore the brunt of this turmoil. Renowned figures like Ogunde, Ogunmola, Ladipo, Adejobi, Ogunsola, and Moses Olaiya (Baba Sala) found it increasingly difficult to finance overseas ventures or attract foreign producers.

With the adoption of the Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAP) in 1986, the subsequent devaluation of the Naira led to a decline in the Nigerian film industry. Traditional theater productions in cinemas gradually gave way to home videos produced in the VHS format for broadcast on television. Originally referred to as “Video Films,” these VHS productions became the prevailing norm, establishing itself as an industry standard. The first VHS home video was created by Prince Muyideen Alade Aromire in 1984.

Due to his pioneering work, Alade Aromire, much like Hubert Ogunde, can be aptly described as the Father of Nollywood. Prior to 1984, Nigerian film enthusiasts primarily relied on cinema houses for their cinematic entertainment. However, Alade Aromire introduced the first made-in-Nigeria home video titled ‘Ekun.’ This VHS-format production marked a groundbreaking moment as it was the first home video produced by a Nigerian and aired on Nigerian television. Aromire, affectionately referred to as “Alade” by his fans, funded the production of “Ekun” with a loan of 27,000 naira from his parents. The movie was recorded, edited, and produced entirely in Nigeria and made its premiere at Super Cinema, Lagos, in December 1984. The production and subsequent airing of “Ekun” ushered in a new era in the evolution of the movie industry, particularly in the realm of home videos, in Nigeria.

Alade, who tragically lost his life in a motor accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in 2008, made valiant efforts to promote local production when video production on celluloid films, previously dominated by luminaries like Hubert Ogunde and Baba Sala, became financially prohibitive.

Following the success of “Ekun,” Alade sought to further hone his skills and embarked on a journey to Cologne, Germany (then known as West Germany). There, he initially enrolled to study the German language at the Goethe College but eventually switched his focus to Film and Television Production. During an internship at the Dutch Willlick Television Village, located on the outskirts of Dortmund, he was captivated by the German station’s use of the local language. He resolved to undertake a similar endeavor upon completing his studies. Upon graduation, Alade returned to Nigeria and launched Yotomi Telifisan (Yotomi TV), a vernacular broadcasting cable television channel, which soon became a ubiquitous presence in Nigerian households.

Alade continued to refine his artistic talents, pursuing studies at the School of Arts in Apapa, where he consistently demonstrated exceptional skills and stood out for his remarkable abilities. This excellence extended to his establishment of the vernacular magazine “Ariya” in 1986. Before his passing, Alade had amassed a portfolio of over 200 home videos, further solidifying his status in the Nigerian film industry.

While Alade’s initial home video production had a modest budget, films shot on VHS specifically for home video distribution soon gained traction in the domestic market. As these Nigerian video films gained acceptance among the populace, and as economic recovery gathered momentum in the 1990s and 2000s, the Nigerian home video film industry underwent a transformation, giving rise to the Modern Nigerian Cinema. A plethora of talented Nigerian actors and actresses, along with professional producers such as Lere Paimo, Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Joke Silva, Olu Jacobs, Elizabeth (Liz) Benson, Kareem Adepoju, Tubosun Odusi, Ajileye, Lanrewaju Hassan, Idowu Phillips, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Richard Mofe Damijo, Sola Fosudo, Toyin Adegbola, Kate Henshaw, Stephane Okereke, Uche Jombo, Rachel Oniga, Patience Ozokwor, Kanayo D. Kanayo, Saint Obi, Segun Arinze, Clarence Chukwurah, Chioma Akpotha, Rita Dominic, Genevieve Nnaji, Chris Obi Rapu, Kenneth Nnebue, Okechukwu Ogunjiofor, Kenneth Okonkwo, Nnenna Nwabueze, Sam Loco Efe, Nkem Owoh, Peter Edochie, and many others, rose to prominence. As evident from the names mentioned, a significant number of them transitioned from the old theater era.

Home video producers, marketers, and vendors reaped substantial profits from films like “Irapada,” “The Wedding Party,” “Living in Bondage,” and others. The Nigerian Home Video Film industry has since become a powerhouse, generating employment opportunities for countless young Nigerians. Nollywood, as it is now known, has transcended Nigeria’s borders and achieved global recognition, success, and widespread acceptance.

While the origin of the term “Nollywood” is often attributed to an article by Matt Steinglass in the 2002 edition of the New York Times, it was initially used by Wolf Blitzer on the Cable News Network (CNN). The term is a portmanteau of “Nigeria” and “Hollywood.” Arguably, Nigeria’s movie industry produces between 30 and 50 full-length movies per week, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP and gaining international acclaim and respect.
