The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), has advised members of Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) and tanker drivers in Osun against fuel diversion in the state.
Mr Ademola Makinde, DPR’s Operations Controller in Osun gave the advise at the maiden Sensitisation Workshop for IPMAN Members on Thursday in Ile-Ife, Osun state, tagged “Oil and Gas Safe Practices: My Civic Obligation”.
Makinde said diversion of PMS attracts a fine of N200 per litre of fuel diverted from the state or town it was originally meant for.
“The Nigerian public has come to the full awareness that oil and gas does not only generate benefits but also causes hazards if not properly handled.
“The theme of this workshop has always been tailored to specifically reflect the pecularity of the prevailing issues in the oil and gas marketing sector in the state”, Makinde said.
The controller urged IPMAN members to always indicate the exact location of landing on their Way Bill at the depot of loading.
He said any dealer caught diverting fuel to a location not stated in the Way Bill would be sanctioned, adding that the regulated product (PMS) had already been subsidized and people of the particular location where the product was meant for must be allowed to enjoy that subsidy.
Makinde also warned tanker drivers against selling fuel to roadside dealers, indicating that such behaviour was against DPR guildlines.
The DPR boss who noted that those who sell the product by the roadside were not authorized to do so, said
anyone caught selling or buying fuel by the roadside would be made to face the wrath of the law.
In his remarks, Mr. Olusegun Daboh, DPR Head of Operations, said surveillance inspection conducted in the state by the Department revealed high level of infractions in almost all the filling stations.
Daboh said the infractions range from under dispensing of products, poor housekeeping, operating with expired licence to maintaining illegal filling stations among others.
“Consequently, upholding the Department’s obligation to ensure adequate supply of fuel at stipulated government price regimes necessitated the sensitisation workshop”, Daboh said.
Also speaking, Mr Kayode Rotimi, IPMAN Chairman in Ile-Ife, appealed to government to ban the sale of petroleum products by the roadside.
Rotimi said such an act was not in the interest of government, IPMAN and the Nigerian people.
Representatives of the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence, Road Safety and Fire Service, who were at the workshop called for synergy between IPMAN, DPR and Security agencies.
