A medical expert with Osun State Primary Healthcare Board (OSPHCB), Roseline Akinlabi, has called for increased uptake of family planning in the state.
She made the call during an online engagement organised by the Osun State Public Health Reporters last weekend with support from The Challenge Initiative (TCI).
Akinlabi noted that increased uptake of family planning could help reduce the high maternal mortality and morbidity rate as well as curb the prevalence of teenage pregnancy in the state and the country.
The Registered Public Health Nurse who doubles as the Adolescent and Youth Reproductive Health Desk Officer in Osun state identified myths and misconceptions as the biggest barriers to family planning in the state, urging people to discountenance such false narratives.
She said: “Myths and misconceptions surrounding family planning negatively impact child spacing. It also increases the rate of abortion by preventing the use of contraceptives, leading to unwanted pregnancies, and subsequently, more abortions.
“Such false beliefs as peddled by ignorant people create barriers to access and utilisation of family planning methods, thereby increasing the risks of unwanted pregnancies and risky sexual behaviour.”
Akinlabi urged collective efforts in dispelling the misconceptions and tasked couples in the state to take up any suitable family planning method for the health and stability of their family.
“It is our collective responsibility to dispel rumours about contraceptives. It is also incumbent on all of us to raise awareness about the benefits of family planning and create safer spaces for our girls and women”, she said.
Akinlabi emphasized that the popular beliefs that contraceptive pills could encourage infidelity and permanent infertility in women were misleading and not correct, asking both men and women of child bearing age not to fall for such misinformation.
The medical expert also made a case for contraceptives pills, clarifying that they are strictly for family planning and child spacing and not for frivolities.
She insisted that contraceptive pills do not cause cancer, pushing back against the false claim that contraceptive pills cause ovarian cancer.
Akinlabi also affirmed that family planning empowers individuals and couples to choose the number of children they intend to have in a way that prioritizes spacing and timing of pregnancy for healthier outcomes.
