The Federal and State Governments of Nigeria have been urged to prioritize technical education in their bid to fast track technological development of the country.
Chairman of the Governing Board of Osun State College of Technology, Esa- Oke, Diran Odeyemi, gave the advice while fielding questions from journalists in Osogbo during the week.
Odeyemi decried the neglect of polytechnic education in Nigeria and linked it to the country’s underdevelopment in technology.
He noted that while the government focused mostly on licensing private universities, nothing significant had been done about polytechnic education.
He said: “In as much as we continue to pay lip service to polytechnic education, we will continue to move around in circles.
“Any nation that is in a hurry to develop its technology must emphasize polytechnic education.
“Polytechnic education is important for technological advancement, sadly, it is being neglected by governments at all levels”, he lamented.
The chairman said it is only when adequate attention is paid to polytechnic education that the potentials of the youths of the country in the area of technology can be fully realized.
Odeyemi further urged federal and state governments to initiate policies that would improve the curriculum of technical and polytechnic education in the country in line with global best practices.
