This morning, a Facebook post about the graduation program at Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso, caught my attention. The program listed only five students graduating from the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, all of whom were awarded Third Class honors. This unusual outcome sparked considerable debate on social media, with many calling for the dismissal of the department’s faculty—a sentiment frequently echoed in similar situations across Nigeria.

Contrastingly, there have been instances where privately-owned universities were criticized for awarding a high number of First Class degrees, with accusations of diminishing educational standards rather than calls to reward the educators responsible for such high achievements.

Why are students in privately-owned universities in Nigeria recording a huge number of First Class degrees?

As the Head of Department at a private university in Nigeria, we faced challenges of low enrollment. In response, we implemented proactive recruitment strategies in 2006, such as early advertising and outreach to top high schools, along with offering scholarships to the top three students each semester. These initiatives not only attracted high-caliber students but also led to their graduating with First Class honors, securing automatic employment, and further opportunities for advanced studies abroad. These students continued to excel, consistently topping their classes, even overseas.

Given this context, the criticism of the faculty at LAUTECH’s Medical Laboratory Science department appears misdirected. Is a pass rate truly an objective indicator of teaching effectiveness? Is graduation rate a measure of pedagogical competence? Globally, while these metrics are considered, they form only a small part of the broader evaluation matrix for teaching effectiveness.

Therefore, the quickness to condemn my colleagues at LAUTECH seems misguided. This discussion invites a deeper examination of how teaching effectiveness should be measured, specifically considering the role of pass and graduation rates in such assessments.

Are Pass Rate and/or Graduation Rate Objective Measurement of Teaching Effectiveness?

Exploring the objective measurement of teaching effectiveness is a critical yet often debated topic in the education sector. Determining what makes an educator successful involves quantifying certain aspects of teaching through measurable data. Objective measurement can include a variety of metrics, such as standardized test scores, classroom observation by trained evaluators, and analysis of student learning progress. These metrics provide a data-driven approach that helps educators understand the effectiveness of their teaching methods and their impact on student learning.

The significance of using objective criteria in assessing teaching effectiveness lies in its ability to ensure that evaluations are fair, consistent, and transparent. This objective approach aids educational institutions in identifying areas where teachers excel and where improvement is needed, promoting a culture of continuous professional development. By incorporating quantifiable measures, stakeholders can rely on a systematic approach to enhance teaching quality and outcomes.

However, employing objective measures also presents challenges. Student grades are often considered a measure of teaching effectiveness, but relying solely on them as an indicator can be problematic and incomplete. Grades can reflect a student’s understanding and mastery of the material, which suggests that they could provide some insight into how effectively a teacher communicates and educates. However, grades are influenced by multiple factors that extend beyond teaching quality.

Individual student abilities, prior knowledge, motivation, and external circumstances can greatly affect academic performance. Thus, while grades may in part indicate effective teaching, they can also reflect these diverse and personal variables that are independent of a teacher’s influence. Moreover, the design of assessments used to determine grades plays a critical role. If assessments are not well-aligned with the learning objectives or fail to accurately capture student learning, they might not be a reliable measure of teaching effectiveness.

Additionally, grading standards can vary significantly between classes, schools, and districts. This lack of standardization means that comparing teaching effectiveness based on grades alone can lead to misleading conclusions. To gauge teaching effectiveness more accurately, it is essential to consider grades alongside other data points.

Measuring students’ progress over time, rather than at a single point, can provide a clearer picture of a teacher’s impact on learning. Feedback from students and peers can offer qualitative insights into a teacher’s methods and classroom environment, which grades alone cannot provide. Regular classroom observations by other educators or trained evaluators also play a crucial role in assessing teaching practices objectively.

While grades can provide some useful information about teaching effectiveness, they are just one component of a broader evaluation system. A more holistic approach should involve multiple measures to capture the various dimensions of teaching quality and its impact on student learning. This approach ensures a comprehensive assessment of a teacher’s effectiveness, taking into account both quantitative and qualitative factors.

As we refine the methods of measuring teaching effectiveness, it is crucial to engage in discussions that consider both the benefits and limitations of objective measures. Educators and stakeholders must collaborate to develop assessment methods that are both reliable and fair, considering diverse educational settings and needs. Through this collective effort, we can better understand and enhance the effectiveness of teaching, ultimately benefiting students and the broader educational landscape.

Blame Not LAUTECH

As we evaluate the situation of my colleagues at LAUTECH, it is important to acknowledge that annual evaluations conducted within the university have consistently affirmed the qualifications of these faculty members, allowing them to maintain their positions. Furthermore, the National University Commission (NUC), which oversees educational standards in Nigeria, has deemed these instructors competent to teach at the institution. Thus, one must question the basis on which critics demand their dismissal.

Drawing on my experience in academia across three continents, I have observed a decline in the caliber of students entering universities. It is essential to recognize that educators cannot be expected to perform miracles given the existing challenges in student preparedness.

As a member of LAUTECH observed, the five graduating students, having carry-overs from previous cohorts, only recently met the necessary academic requirements to graduate. Consequently, these students, who demonstrated academic weaknesses, should not be considered representatives of the Department or the university as a whole.
