Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, finds itself at a critical juncture in its economic history. The transition of power to the current administration under President Bola Tinubu has brought about significant economic challenges and opportunities. To fully understand the current economic state of Nigeria and the reasons Nigerians should support the Tinubu government, it is crucial to analyze the preceding administration’s actions, the inherited economic landscape, and the reforms so far undertaken by Tinubu. Drawing parallels with past reforms, such as those by Mikhail Gorbachev in the Soviet Union, I provide below a comprehensive overview of the situation and argue why supporting the current government is vital for Nigeria’s economic recovery and growth.

President Tinubu assumed office at a time when Nigeria’s economy was teetering on the brink of collapse. The outgoing administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, who also inherited a dilapidated economy, left behind a legacy of significant economic challenges.

Before going into the economy inherited by Tinubu, let’s remind ourselves of the kind of economy inherited by Buhari, himself. Under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) administration, which spanned from 1999 to 2015, Nigeria’s economy experienced a mix of growth and challenges. The PDP oversaw a period of relative economic stability, benefiting from high global oil prices which significantly boosted government revenues. This period also saw Nigeria rebasing its GDP in 2014, making it the largest economy in Africa at the time.

The administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, which began in 2015, inherited several economic challenges from the PDP. These included a high level of unemployment, pervasive poverty, and an economy overly dependent on oil revenues. The initial years of the Buhari administration were particularly difficult, as global oil prices plummeted, leading to a severe economic downturn. The economy entered a recession in 2016, the first in 25 years, primarily due to the sharp decline in oil revenues, which accounted for a substantial portion of the government’s income and foreign exchange earnings.

Efforts by the Buhari administration to diversify the economy have had mixed results. While there has been some growth in the agriculture and services sectors, the overall economic diversification has been slow and inconsistent. High inflation rates and a depreciating naira further compounded the economic difficulties. Inflation rose significantly during Buhari’s tenure, driven by increased fuel costs and the depreciation of the national currency following the floating of the naira.

In summary, while the PDP era saw significant economic milestones, it also left behind systemic issues that the Buhari administration struggled to address. The economic quagmire inherited by Buhari was exacerbated by external shocks, including fluctuating oil prices and global economic conditions, which continued to challenge Nigeria’s economic stability and growth.

With the above in mind, we can begin to understand the task ahead of Tinubu, most especially the need to stop seeking for quick-fix solutions and knee-jerk reactions.

Key among the challenges inherited by Tinubu were the removal of subsidies, advanced crude oil sales to secure loans, and a staggering debt-to-revenue ratio. The subsidy removal, although publicly highlighted by Tinubu, was a move initiated by the Buhari administration. This decision was necessary to address the fiscal imbalance but was met with public outcry due to the immediate impact on fuel prices and living costs. Buhari’s government sold crude oil in advance to secure large loans, creating a burden for the incoming administration. This meant that regardless of who won the presidential election, be it Peter Obi or Atiku Abubakar, the new government would face the same fiscal constraints. Perhaps the most alarming aspect of the inherited economy was the debt-to-revenue ratio, which stood at over 90%. This meant that 90% of Nigeria’s oil revenue was committed to servicing debt, leaving only a fraction available for government spending.

In the face of these daunting challenges, President Tinubu has embarked on a series of reforms aimed at stabilizing and revitalizing Nigeria’s economy. His approach, while controversial, mirrors the necessity-driven reforms of Gorbachev during the Soviet Union’s economic crisis. Within his first year in office, Tinubu has managed to reduce the debt-to-revenue ratio from 90% to 68% (Nairametrics, 2024). This improvement has tripled the monthly allocations to federal, state, and local governments, providing much-needed financial breathing space for developmental projects. Understanding the limitations imposed by existing debts, Tinubu sought loans from the World Bank and the IMF. These loans came with stringent conditions, including the removal of subsidies and the floating of the naira. Unlike his predecessor, who avoided these measures, Tinubu recognized them as necessary steps to secure financial support and stabilize the economy (World Bank, 2024).

Recognizing the importance of infrastructure and security, Tinubu’s administration has prioritized fixing road networks and addressing security concerns. Improved infrastructure will facilitate economic activities, while enhanced security will boost agricultural production and the distribution of goods and services. The GDP growth rate in the first quarter of 2024 was 2.98%, driven mainly by the services sector, which contributed 58.04% to the aggregate GDP (National Bureau of Statistics, 2024). Tinubu’s government is also exploring ways to support the manufacturing sector by encouraging commercial banks to offer loans at lower interest rates. This initiative aims to reduce dependence on imports, promote local manufacturing, and increase exports, thereby strengthening the economy.

The parallels between Tinubu’s reforms and Gorbachev’s perestroika are evident. Both leaders inherited economies in dire straits and faced the daunting task of implementing unpopular but necessary reforms. Gorbachev’s reforms were aimed at restructuring the Soviet economy, introducing elements of market dynamics, and reducing state control. Similarly, Tinubu’s measures are geared towards reducing debt, enhancing revenue allocation, and promoting economic stability. However, it is crucial to note that while Gorbachev’s reforms ultimately contributed to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, they also laid the groundwork for a more open and market-oriented Russian economy. Tinubu’s reforms, if supported and sustained, hold the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy, leading to long-term growth and stability.

Nigerians must recognize the complexity of the economic challenges and the necessity of the reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration. Supporting the current government is essential for several reasons. The initial reforms have already shown positive results, with improved debt-to-revenue ratios and increased allocations to various levels of government. Continued support will ensure the momentum is maintained. Investment in infrastructure and security will create a conducive environment for economic activities, attract investments, and improve the quality of life for Nigerians. Supporting local manufacturing and reducing import dependence will boost the economy, create jobs, and enhance Nigeria’s position in the global market. The reforms are not a quick fix but a long-term strategy to reposition Nigeria’s economy. Patience and support from the populace are crucial for achieving sustainable growth.

Nigeria’s economic challenges are significant, but with strategic reforms and the support of the populace, the Tinubu administration can navigate these challenges and steer the country towards economic recovery and growth. By learning from past reforms and recognizing the necessity of current measures, Nigerians can play a pivotal role in shaping a prosperous future. Supporting the Tinubu government is not just a political choice but an economic imperative for the nation.
