Osun Monarch Cautions Against Denigrating Former Army Chief
A traditional ruler in Osun state, Oba Hameed Adekunle Makama, has warned against campaign of calumny against Nigeria’s former Army Chief, Lt. General Tukur Buratai.
Oba Makama gave the warning at his palace in Kuta, while addressing a press conference on the need for citizens to respect the nation’s ex-service men.
He said the military of any nation is its pride and those who retire from it should enjoy the love, respect and support of all citizens.
The monarch’s warning came on the heels of allegations of financial impropriety leveled against Lt. General Tukur Buratai.
Oba Makama said such unsubstantiated claims against the former COAS could demoralize good men working for the good of the nation.
His words: “It is therefore considered the most unpatriotic act for anyone to keep insulting this gentleman, whose antecedents, even as a diplomat, have continued to stand him out as an honest, transparent and patriotic Nigerian.”
The monarch said even though the former Army Chief had formally made his defense through his counsel, he nonetheless still felt the need to support him since he could vouch for General’s character.
He said: “I make bold to say that Ambassador Buratai remains a man of immense honor. His years of meritorious service to his fatherland cannot be overlooked, and as a patriot, having been tested and proven in his commitment to nation building.”
Oba Makama urged Nigerians to desist from making further derogatory comments about the former Army Chief, since the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) had said the house initially ascribed to General Buratai belongs to someone else.
“The misinforming reports, I stand to confirm, is purely malicious and another fabricated tale published to tarnish Ambassador Buratai’s brilliant image.
“But this too has failed, because the ICPC’s official public statement has confirmed Buratai has no link with the said property, or the cash and other items found in the building.”
The traditional ruler said distractions in the form of denigrating comments about serving and ex-military officers could demoralize the men and officers still fighting for their fatherland.
Oba Makama urged all Nigerians to support the former Army Chief in his present assignment as an ambassador of the country working in a foreign land.
