The Oyo State Government has collaborated with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria.
Speaking at the opening of a two day Media Dialogue in support of advocacy to end the practice, the Permanent Secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Information and Orientation, Rotimi Babalola, said the task was critical and urgent.
Babalola stated that Oyo State was determined to eliminate FGM not just from communities in the state but the entire country as a whole, hence the ministry’s engagements in the past few weeks.
He said: “I want to thank everyone for the past engagements we have had, especially the ones that concern women and children. It shows our passion and commitment to advocating against harmful practices that affect women and girls in our society.
“It is a worthy cause to pursue and we should not stop until we see an end to practices that hurt or degrade women and girls in our communities.
“Last two weeks we were in Lagos. Four days ago, we were with CSOs in Oyo State, and today we are here in Edo state, making it the third straight week we have been engaging with stakeholders on the best strategies to adopt to end FGM in Nigeria.”
Babalola, who called for greater media coverage to raise awareness about the harmful consequences of FGM, cautioned practitioners from over sensationalizing the issue.
He urged journalists to be sensitive in their reportage of FGM stories to avoid re-traumatizing survivors by making them relive the unpleasant experience over again.
“Let me commend you for what you have been doing, but I will urge you to do more for the cause so that we can effectively end Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria.”
“However, I want to also appeal to you that the news stories you do should respect the privacy of subjects and desist from re-traumatizing survivors. We do not want our reports to be counter productive in any way,” Babalola warned.
In her welcome address, Celine Lafoucriere, UNICEF Chief of Lagos Field Office, said over 20 million women and girls in Nigeria have undergone FGM, making it imperative for urgent intervention.
Lafoucriere said most of those who make up the number were too young to understand the harm done to them, highlighting the need to further protect the rights of young girls and women in Nigeria.
“Most of them were cut before their sixth birthday and at that stage, they are completely powerless, they can’t resist or even understand what is happening to them.”
Lafoucriere noted that despite campaigns against FGM in the country, the practice still persists through myths, traditions and ignorance in many communities.
She called for collaborative action to double down on the myths that fuel the practice of FGM and end it once and for all.
According to her, steps already taken by the Federal Government of Nigeria through policies and initiatives could be adapted by states to suit their peculiarities.
“The good news is that change can happen through collaboration like the movement and initiative led by the federal government in collaboration with UNICEF.
“Millions of Nigerian people have already pledged to protect girls from being cut. Survivors are leading the way and young people are demanding for a better future,” Lafoucriere stated.
The UNICEF Chief urged the media to amplify the voices of survivors as a recurring strategy to raise FGM awareness and spark conversations in the grassroots where the practice is still prevalent.
The two-day Media Dialogue was held in Benin City, Edo state, to look for more effective strategies to end Female Genital Mutilation in Nigeria, particularly in Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos and Edo states.
