Mr. Ayo Ojeniyi, a Nigerian popular personality, recently shared a thought-provoking piece on social media advocating for Nigeria’s adoption of STEM education. Using India as a case study, he highlighted how a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics has transformed the South Asian nation into a global hub for technology and innovation. Many of his followers lauded his perspective, some attributing Nigeria’s challenges to its failure to adopt similar policies. Others pointed out that Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 educational policy, which was initially premised on STEM, faltered due to poor leadership and inadequate funding. While Mr. Ojeniyi’s argument is compelling, it is worth noting that such ideas are not novel. Similar optimism underpinned the adoption of the Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) in the 1980s, mediated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. However, instead of lifting Nigeria out of its challenges, SAP exacerbated its economic woes and entrenched systemic poverty.

In this essay, I examine the idea of adopting STEM-focused policies, measure their successes and limitations, and argue that while STEM holds immense promise, it is insufficient unless implemented in tandem with disciplines in the Humanities, Education, and Social Sciences. Using examples such as Facebook and its content dynamics, I illustrate how STEM must work alongside other fields to achieve meaningful and sustainable development.

The promise of STEM education lies in its ability to drive technological innovation, economic growth, and problem-solving. Countries like India have become poster children for the transformative power of STEM. India’s investment in engineering and technology education, particularly through its Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), has produced a generation of globally competitive professionals. Today, Indian engineers and IT specialists occupy leadership positions in major global corporations like Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. Similarly, South Korea’s focus on STEM has turned the country into a leader in electronics, robotics, and biotechnology, propelling its economy to unprecedented heights. These examples highlight the economic potential of STEM education and its ability to create high-paying jobs and attract foreign investment.

STEM also fosters innovation that addresses global challenges. For instance, advancements in renewable energy technologies have been driven by STEM professionals seeking solutions to climate change. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines, particularly the mRNA technology pioneered by BioNTech and Moderna, underscores the critical role of STEM in responding to public health crises. These achievements demonstrate the potential of STEM to solve pressing global issues and improve quality of life.

However, the overemphasis on STEM comes with significant drawbacks, particularly when implemented without a broader interdisciplinary framework. A singular focus on STEM risks marginalizing other disciplines that provide essential insights into the human, ethical, and cultural dimensions of technological advancements. Facebook, for example, is a product of STEM—its algorithms, coding, and data systems are the result of technological ingenuity. However, Facebook’s content, which drives user engagement, is rooted in disciplines like the humanities, education, and social sciences. Writers, sociologists, educators, and cultural analysts create the stories, discussions, and debates that make Facebook a dynamic platform. Moreover, when Facebook faced challenges like misinformation, hate speech, and privacy violations, solutions required the expertise of ethicists, psychologists, and legal scholars—not just engineers. This demonstrates that while STEM creates the infrastructure, the humanities and social sciences give it meaning and address its societal impact.

Nigeria’s history offers further lessons on the risks of uncritical adoption of popular policies. The Structural Adjustment Program of the 1980s, introduced to stabilize Nigeria’s economy, was rooted in economic science—a field that overlaps with STEM. Promised prosperity turned into hardship as the program resulted in devaluation of the naira, widespread unemployment, and the collapse of public services. The failure of SAP was not merely due to flaws in economic theory but also the absence of cultural, historical, and social considerations in its design and implementation. The lesson here is that technical solutions alone cannot address complex societal challenges.

Furthermore, the marginalization of non-STEM fields in education and policy development risks creating a workforce that lacks critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Nigeria’s adoption of the 6-3-3-4 system was meant to promote technical and vocational training, but the neglect of proper funding and holistic implementation led to its failure. By focusing exclusively on technical education, the policy failed to address the broader educational needs of the population, such as civic engagement, leadership, and ethical decision-making, which are often cultivated in the humanities and social sciences.

Globally, successful education systems demonstrate the value of integrating STEM with other disciplines. Germany’s dual education system combines vocational training with academic study, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings while collaborating with professionals in non-STEM fields. Similarly, Stanford University’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) initiative blends STEM with philosophy, psychology, and sociology, ensuring that technological advancements align with human values. Finland’s education system emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, encouraging students to work on collaborative projects that address societal challenges creatively and inclusively.

In conclusion, STEM education is undoubtedly vital for economic development, innovation, and addressing global challenges. However, Nigeria must avoid the trap of viewing STEM as a panacea for all its problems. As Facebook illustrates, technological infrastructure without meaningful content and ethical considerations is incomplete. To achieve sustainable progress, Nigeria must adopt an interdisciplinary approach that values the contributions of STEM and non-STEM fields alike. Such a model would ensure that technical innovations are enriched by cultural, ethical, and social insights, fostering a society that is both technologically advanced and deeply connected to its human roots.
