The Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) and Osun State government have committed to promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in Osun State. The commitment was made on Tuesday in Osogbo at a round table discussion with policymakers on the progress of sexual and reproductive rights in the state.
WARDC’s Director of Programmes, Emmanuella Azu, in her welcome address, stated that partnering with policymakers was to facilitate a robust policy document that would incorporate the STOP guidelines.
Azu, who noted that the STOP guidelines as approved by the Federal Government exist in the state, lamented its poor implementation and capacity to protect the sexual and reproductive rights of vulnerable women and girls in Osun State.
According to her, the inability of stakeholders to holistically discuss issues relating to SRHR and make appropriate policy changes has led to violations of women’s sexual and reproductive rights. Azu explained that the roundtable discussion became necessary to address the challenges arising from the gaps in SRHR awareness and the need to proffer solutions to plug them.
The Director of Programmes said the slow progress of SRHR services in the state, especially those relating to vulnerable women and girls, called for more concerted efforts.
Azu said, “The need to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women should not be downplayed. In fact, judging by the high rate of maternal mortality among vulnerable women and girls in the country, SRHR awareness must be taken very seriously by all stakeholders.
“We believe that effective implementation of a legislative framework on sexual and reproductive health and rights of women generally would go a long way in addressing issues surrounding maternal mortality, gender-based violence, as well as SRHR violations.”
Azu then called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders, including government, institutions, the media, and well-meaning individuals, to help in enlightening residents, especially women, girls and men, about SRHR.
Responding, Ayobola Awolowo, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs, commended WARDC for the initiative and promised to sustain the campaign among young girls and vulnerable women in the state.
“I want to commend the WARDC for their proactive measures towards ensuring that fundamental rights for young minds and vulnerable groups are protected.
“We look forward to the transformative actions that would emerge after this gathering for upward review by the state government. It’s a worthy cause that we all must support,” she said.
The Commissioner noted that the dignity, rights, and future of young minds and vulnerable groups must to be protected. Furthermore, the Commissioner stated that a vibrant legislative framework and principles must guide such processes.
She concluded that access to sexual and reproductive health and rights in the state would not be treated as a privilege but as fundamental rights for sustainable development and growth.
The high-level meeting advocated intense community engagement and awareness campaigns, backed by youth-friendly and gender-sensitive SRHR services to achieve greater impact.
