Sport derives its legitimacy not merely from skill or victory, but from the shared assumption that competition is conducted on a level playing field. Football (aka soccer), in particular, depends on a fragile moral contract: that while teams will seek every legal advantage, they will not deliberately undermine the opponent’s basic ability to perform. When this contract collapses, the spectacle degenerates into farce, and victory itself becomes morally hollow. Recent competitions involving Moroccan teams have exposed precisely such a collapse—one marked by systematic interference, deliberate obstruction, and the normalization of cheating under the guise of “home advantage.”

Across multiple matches, opposing teams faced consistent and coordinated denial of basic match accessories—most notably towels provided as standard supplies to allow goalkeepers to dry the ball and their gloves. These were not isolated incidents or spontaneous acts of overzealous ball-boys. Rather, they formed a pattern involving ball-boys and girls, ground staff, substitute players, and even senior members of the Moroccan teams themselves. On numerous occasions, ball attendants scaled advertising boards, entered the field of play, and physically removed towels from goalkeepers’ hands. At times, they seized these materials directly from goalkeepers preparing to restart play, preventing them from drying the ball or their gloves and thereby compromising their ability to perform optimally.

As a referee myself, permit me to assert that this behavior crossed a clear ethical line. IFAB Laws of the Game Law 4 specifically permits and recognizes the goalkeeper’s right to manage equipment necessary for safe and effective play. Interfering with this process is not gamesmanship; it is sabotage. When such acts are repeated openly, in full view of cameras, officials, and spectators, they cease to be misconduct by individuals and become institutionalized unfairness.

Achraf Hakimi – the face of fraud!!

What makes these incidents particularly disturbing is the involvement of players who should embody professionalism and leadership. Achraf Hakimi, captain of the Moroccan national team and a player of global stature, was captured on camera deliberately removing a towel and handing it to ball-boys and ground staff. This was not an impulsive act by a fringe figure; it was a conscious intervention by a team leader, undertaken without shame and in plain sight. Conduct of this nature is profoundly unbecoming of a footballer of his caliber and contradicts the standards expected of a captain representing both club and country. Leadership in sport demands restraint, integrity, and respect for the rules—not complicity in their erosion.

Equally troubling was the apparent indifference of match officials. Center referees and assistant referees repeatedly failed to intervene, caution, or sanction these acts, despite their visibility and frequency. This failure of officiating contributed directly to rising tensions on the pitch, culminating in emotional breakdowns and confrontations, most notably involving Senegalese players in the final. While player conduct must always be assessed independently, it is disingenuous to ignore the conditions that produced such frustration. When officials permit systematic obstruction, they become silent accomplices in the distortion of competition.

History offers sobering parallels. Football has long struggled with the boundaries between gamesmanship and cheating. In 2013, Eden Hazard was widely criticized for kicking a ball-boy at Stamford Bridge after the attendant deliberately withheld the ball to waste time. While Hazard’s action was rightly condemned, the incident sparked broader debate about the role of ball attendants and their manipulation by home teams. Similarly, South American football has witnessed repeated controversies involving ball-boys delaying restarts, hiding balls, or throwing additional balls onto the pitch to disrupt play—acts that CONMEBOL has since attempted to regulate through stricter protocols and sanctions.

Other sports provide even clearer precedents. In cricket, the manipulation of the ball—whether through tampering or interference—has resulted in severe penalties, including bans for senior players, as seen in the 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal. The message was unambiguous: any act that deliberately undermines fair competition, no matter how normalized within a team culture, demands decisive punishment to preserve the sport’s integrity.

African football cannot afford to lag behind these standards. The credibility of continental competitions such as AFCON rests on the perception that all teams, regardless of host status, compete under equal conditions. When host nations exploit logistical control—ball supply, towel access, ground staff behavior—to tilt the field in their favor, they undermine not only their opponents but the competition itself. Home advantage is meant to inspire crowd support, not facilitate organized interference.

The moral danger lies in normalization. If such conduct goes uninvestigated and unpunished, it risks becoming standard practice. Young players, ball attendants, and officials learn that winning justifies any means. Future hosts may feel emboldened to escalate these tactics, knowing that governing bodies lack the will to intervene. In this sense, the issue extends beyond Morocco; it threatens the ethical foundation of African football as a whole.

For these reasons, the just-concluded AFCON must be subjected to a formal investigation. CAF should review match footage, referee reports, and official conduct to determine the extent of organized interference and complicity. Sanctions—whether fines, suspensions, or official reprimands—should be imposed where violations are established. Importantly, responsibility must be apportioned not only to ball attendants but also to players, coaching staff, and match officials who enabled or encouraged these acts.

Deterrence matters. Sport, like society, functions on norms enforced through consequence. Without accountability, appeals to “fair play” become empty slogans. Football deserves better. African football, in particular, deserves competitions decided by skill, preparation, and resilience—not by the calculated theft of towels and the obstruction of goalkeepers as Achraf Hakimi and his Moroccan counterparts brazenly did in the just-concluded fiesta.

Victory achieved through unfair means is not triumph; it is an indictment. If the game is to retain its dignity, the field must be leveled—not rigged.
