Introduction

Throughout Nigeria’s post-colonial history, the Igbo ethnic group has witnessed repeated waves of secessionist agitation – each led by fiery young men in their thirties – that have profoundly shaped Igbo fortunes within the Nigerian state. From the Biafran War under Chukwuemeka “Emeka” Odumegwu Ojukwu in the 1960s to the non-violent independence campaign of Ralph Uwazuruike’s MASSOB in the 2000s and the militant resurgence of Nnamdi Kanu’s IPOB in the 2010s, the Igbos have, time and again, entrusted their destiny to youthful zeal. These movements, driven by passion and a sense of injustice, were often marked by haste and hubris, and they ultimately left the Igbo in precarious positions in Nigeria’s political and social landscape. This essay examines the historical and sociopolitical trajectory of Igbo secessionism through these three leaders, critiquing how youthful exuberance – untempered by inclusive strategy or elder wisdom – plunged the Igbo into conflict and isolation. It also explores the broader implications: the irony of a traditionally republican people rallying behind singular strongmen, the deterioration of inter-ethnic relations and the Igbo’s image at home and abroad, and the erosion of consensus-building and educational values amid a rising culture that equates wealth with power. The essay, frank and introspective, aims at understanding how a once-progressive ethos of participatory leadership in Igboland gave way to demagoguery, and what lessons these episodes hold for the Igbo and Nigeria at large.

Ojukwu at 33: The Biafran War and Youthful Ambition

The first and most cataclysmic secession attempt was the declaration of the independent Republic of Biafra in 1967 by Lt. Colonel Emeka Ojukwu, then the 33-year-old military governor of Nigeria’s Eastern Region. The path to Biafra was paved by cascading crises that started with Nigeria’s January 1966 coup and the counter-coup in July of that year. In the chaos that followed, tens of thousands of Igbo people living in northern Nigeria were massacred in pogroms, creating an existential fear of genocide in the East. Ojukwu, a product of Oxford and Sandhurst and son of one of Africa’s richest men, found himself thrust by circumstance into leading his people’s desperate bid for survival. In May 1967, convinced that the Nigerian federation no longer offered safety or equity to Easterners, Ojukwu declared the Eastern Region a sovereign nation, Biafra.

Ojukwu’s bold declaration was backed by widespread Igbo support at the time – a reflection of the collective trauma of the recent massacres and long-simmering ethnic tensions. Yet in hindsight, many observers argue that the secession decision, and the subsequent war against the far larger Nigerian state, were colored by the youthful exuberance and ambition of Ojukwu himself. Ojukwu and Yakubu Gowon (the Nigerian Head of State who was just 32) were “driven by ego” and missed opportunities to compromise, writes Chinua Achebe, who faulted both young leaders for being “blinded by ego, hindered by a lack of administrative experience, and obsessed with interpersonal competitions and petty rivalries”. A veteran Nigerian journalist, Ben Lawrence, reflecting on the war decades later, lamented that “the war looks to me now uncalled for. It was the youthful exuberance of Gowon and Ojukwu… Yes, the Igbos were wronged, but they were very tactless themselves”. This critique underscores how the impetuous decision-making of a 33-year-old war leader – however brilliant and well-educated – helped ignite a catastrophic conflict that might have been averted with more patience and diplomacy.

The human cost of that decision was enormous. The ensuing Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970) lasted nearly three years and became one of Africa’s bloodiest conflicts. By the time Biafra surrendered, an estimated 3 million Biafrans – mostly Igbo – had perished, many of them children starved by the federal blockade and humanitarian disaster that the war triggered. Images of famine in Biafra shocked the world, and to this day the war is remembered not only for its battlefield casualties but for the genocide-like decimation of the Igbo populace. Ojukwu, facing imminent defeat, flew into exile in Cote d’Ivoire as Biafra collapsed in January 1970, an act his detractors branded cowardice but which some historians (including Achebe and American writer Kurt Vonnegut) argued saved Igbo lives by avoiding his likely execution and allowing a more lenient post-war policy from Gowon.

Ojukwu’s personal trajectory in the decades after the war reveals a more chastened man and offers a window into his regrets. He spent 12 years in exile and was only granted amnesty in 1982. Returning to Nigeria, Ojukwu attempted to reintegrate into national politics – even contesting for President in the 2003 election – but he never shook off the legacy of Biafra. He remained a polarizing figure: lionized by his people as “Ikemba” (strength of the nation) and folk hero, yet regarded with suspicion by Nigeria’s establishment. In interviews later in life, Ojukwu often defended his intentions during the war as protecting his people from annihilation, but he also acknowledged the difference that age and experience had made in his perspective. Famously, while reflecting on his actions, Ojukwu observed, “At 33 I reacted as a brilliant 33-year-old… At 66 it is my hope that if I had to face this I should also confront it as a brilliant 66-year-old.”. In those words lies a tacit admission: that the impetuosity of youth drove him to war, and that with the wisdom of hindsight he might have chosen a different path. Indeed, Ojukwu noted that “I did the best I could” for his people at the time, but as an older man he perhaps wouldn’t repeat certain actions. He also cautioned new generations of Igbo against any repeat of such conflict, saying he “led the first war, but I don’t think a second one is necessary” – a stark warning from one who had learned, at great cost, the price of youthful ambition unchecked by prudent counsel.

Uwazuruike’s MASSOB: Non-Violent Agitation and the “New Biafra”

After the trauma of Biafra, the idea of secession went largely dormant for a generation. By the late 1990s, however, Nigeria’s return to democracy and continued ethnic rivalries rekindled separatist sentiment in the Igbo heartland. In 1999, another young Igbo man – Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, then in his late 30s – emerged to “take up the mantle” of leading the Igbos out of Nigeria. Uwazuruike founded the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), tapping into lingering feelings of injustice and marginalization among the Igbos. Unlike Ojukwu, Uwazuruike styled himself after Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr., explicitly adopting a philosophy of non-violence for Biafra’s “actualization”. This stance was no doubt influenced by his education abroad: Uwazuruike had studied Political Science at Punjab University and Law at Bombay University in India, where he imbibed the ideals of peaceful resistance. His approach appealed to a populace wary of war but still yearning for self-determination. Early on, MASSOB rallies were mostly peaceful and symbolic – hoisting the revived Biafran flag, printing Biafran currency, and declaring a “Biafra Independence Day” – actions meant to galvanize Igbo pride while avoiding direct confrontation with the Nigerian state.

MASSOB’s message resonated widely in the South-East. Within a few years, the group’s membership reportedly swelled into the hundreds of thousands; by one account, Nigeria’s intelligence chief estimated in 2006 that MASSOB had over two million members. Many Igbo saw in Uwazuruike a new hope – a leader who might achieve through persistence and negotiation what Ojukwu tried to win on the battlefield. In a striking development that underscored Uwazuruike’s grassroots legitimacy, the revered ex-Biafran leader Ojukwu himself eventually anointed Uwazuruike as his successor in the Biafran struggle. At a 2008 public event (the funeral of Uwazuruike’s mother), Ojukwu openly commended Uwazuruike’s dedication and encouraged him to continue pressing the cause. Not long after Ojukwu’s death in 2011, Igbo traditional authorities conferred on Uwazuruike the title of “Eze Igbo” (King of the Igbo) and the symbolic “Ofo” staff of Igbo leadership, effectively crowning him the new leader of the Igbo nation in Ojukwu’s stead. This extraordinary gesture by the Ancient Nri Kingdom, custodians of Igbo heritage, was steeped in symbolism: the Nri elders noted that they had given Ojukwu a similar anointing decades earlier, and now deemed Uwazuruike “fit to lead the Igbo” based on his activities and the “attitude… of extra leadership quality” he had shown in championing Biafra’s resurgence. They even expressed mild astonishment (and admiration) that he preached non-violence – observing that “no revolution is achieved without violence; in your case, you preached non-violence, which to us watchers was strange because you listened to your mentor, the late Ikemba Ojukwu”. In the eyes of many Igbo, MASSOB under Uwazuruike had become the spiritual heir of the Biafran dream, pursued with more patience and less bloodshed.

However, the reality of MASSOB’s campaign was more complicated than its pacifist rhetoric suggested. The Nigerian government under President Olusegun Obasanjo was deeply wary of any secessionist movement, violent or not, and moved quickly to clamp down on MASSOB. Within its first two years, thousands of MASSOB members were arrested; by May 2001, over 2,500 were in prison and “hundreds” had been killed in clashes with security forces. The police accused MASSOB of various crimes – from extortion and vandalism to running unauthorized “security” cells that detained and tortured people – effectively painting the movement as a dangerous insurrection under the guise of non-violence. Uwazuruike himself was arrested multiple times. In 2005 he was detained on treason charges and spent two years in custody before being released on bail. Tellingly, one of his earliest brushes with the law involved weapons charges: in 2001, Uwazuruike and some followers were arrested and charged with “disturbance and the unauthorized use of firearms”. This indicates that even as MASSOB professed a Gandhian philosophy, it was not immune to the temptations of militancy; some members armed themselves, whether for self-defense or otherwise, undermining the movement’s strictly non-violent credibility. The irony of a “non-violent” leader standing trial for possession of firearms was not lost on observers, and it handed Nigerian authorities a pretext to label MASSOB hypocritical. Indeed, President Obasanjo derisively likened MASSOB to the Bakassi Boys (a brutal vigilante group in the South-East) and the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC, a sometimes-violent Yoruba nationalist group), insisting that all such ethnic militias were threats to national security.

MASSOB thus walked a tenuous line: trying to keep the Igbo public invested in a Biafran dream without crossing the threshold into open rebellion. Over time, maintaining non-violence became increasingly difficult. The movement faced internal strains and criticism of Uwazuruike’s leadership. By the late 2000s, some Igbos grew impatient with MASSOB’s lack of tangible progress – Biafra had not materialized by the group’s own declared target year of 2003 – and were frustrated by the cycle of protests and arrests. Moreover, whispers of corruption and authoritarianism dogged Uwazuruike; detractors accused him of using the Biafra struggle for personal enrichment or clout, although his supporters vehemently denied this. In an interesting twist, after Ojukwu lost his bid for the Nigerian presidency in 2003, he grew closer to MASSOB, seemingly acknowledging that the movement had genuine support. (Ojukwu had initially dismissed MASSOB as “unserious people pursuing phantom visions”, but “later warmed up to the group and declared his strong support — coincidentally after losing the presidential election of April 2003”.) MASSOB in turn vocally defended Ojukwu’s honor whenever the old warlord was threatened by authorities. This mutual embrace between Ojukwu and Uwazuruike lent MASSOB further legitimacy among Igbos; as Uwazuruike proudly put it in 2004, “MASSOB is Ojukwu’s child. He has no choice than to support the movement.”

Despite these endorsements, MASSOB gradually lost momentum as the years passed. Government crackdowns, internal divisions, and the emergence of new voices of Igbo discontent all took their toll. By the early 2010s, the push for Biafra would take a new and far more radical turn – one that left Uwazuruike eclipsed. A younger, more radical protégé, Nnamdi Kanu, was waiting in the wings, ready to upstage Uwazuruike and pursue a harsher confrontation with the Nigerian state. It is telling that as Kanu’s star rose, Uwazuruike’s MASSOB splintered – he formed a faction called Biafra Independent Movement (BIM) – and many Igbos shifted their allegiance to the louder, more aggressive IPOB. In a sense, history was repeating itself: just as the elder statesman Ojukwu had once passed the torch (symbolically) to Uwazuruike, now Uwazuruike found himself sidelined by an even younger firebrand claiming to carry the torch of Biafra. Unfortunately, with this transition, the last restraints of non-violence would fall away, and the struggle would enter a dark new phase.

Nnamdi Kanu and the Return to Militancy

Nnamdi Kanu burst onto the scene in the mid-2010s as the most polarizing and militant figure in Igbo secessionism since Ojukwu. In his mid-30s at the time, Kanu had been involved at the fringes of MASSOB but became disillusioned with Uwazuruike’s methods, accusing him of timidity and compromise. Kanu broke away to form the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) around 2013, and set up the incendiary London-based Radio Biafra, through which he disseminated secessionist propaganda back home. Initially, IPOB’s activities were limited to passionate broadcasts and small protests. During the presidency of Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (2010–2015), who is from southern Nigeria (though not Igbo, he was broadly sympathetic to Southern interests), the Biafra agitation was relatively subdued. Many Igbo elites aligned themselves with President Jonathan’s government, and Kanu himself was not yet a household name. Indeed, it appeared that the return of a southern Christian to the helm had momentarily assuaged separatist feelings in the South-East. IPOB did not garner mass support during those years, and Kanu’s fiery radio monologues went largely unheard by the mainstream. In hindsight, however, those years were the quiet before a storm.

The election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015 – a northern Muslim who many Igbos perceived as embodying the old northern hegemonic power structure – dramatically altered the equation. Buhari’s victory (and Jonathan’s loss) was met with deep apprehension in the South-East. Long-standing grievances about Igbo political marginalization resurfaced with vigor. Sensing the Igbo public’s frustration and perhaps seeing his moment, Kanu escalated his agitation. He returned to Nigeria and began touring the South-East, whipping up crowds with a simple, emotive message: Nigeria had failed the Igbos, and Biafra was the only hope. Unlike Uwazuruike’s careful line, Kanu openly challenged the Nigerian state’s authority, even at times encouraging followers to consider armed self-defense. He and his supporters staged massive protests calling for independence. By 2015–2016, IPOB had effectively superseded MASSOB as the face of the Biafra movement – younger, angrier, and less inhibited. Kanu was arrested by Nigerian security forces in October 2015 on charges of treasonable felony, turning him overnight into a martyr figure in the eyes of supporters. After spending over a year in detention, he was released on bail in 2017. The conditions of his bail required that he refrain from mass rallies, but Kanu flagrantly violated them, appearing at rallies surrounded by crowds of chanting, adoring youths who treated him as an almost messianic figure.

Under Kanu’s de facto leadership, the Biafra agitation took on a much more militant tone. This culminated in the creation of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in late 2020 – an armed militia wing established purportedly to protect Igbo communities from marauding Fulani herdsmen, but which soon began clashing with Nigerian security agencies. The introduction of an armed wing marked a dangerous new chapter. Emboldened by a fervent social media following and the illusion of invincibility, Kanu issued a series of draconian directives that deeply affected life in Igboland. He ordered “sit-at-home” mandates, on certain days or every Monday, effectively forcing businesses, schools, and transportation to shut down across the South-East as a show of loyalty to the Biafra cause. Violating these orders invited brutal reprisals from IPOB hardliners. Over time, this campaign of enforced civil disobedience turned parts of the South-East into ghost towns on the mandated days, paralyzing the local economy and instilling fear. In one stretch of 2021–2022, for example, the sit-at-home protests (enforced by violence and intimidation) led to at least 700 deaths and an estimated economic loss of ₦7.6 trillion (nearly \$5 billion) in the region. What began as a political protest was morphing into internecine terror. Igbo-on-Igbo violence – with IPOB’s so-called “unknown gunmen” assassinating local officials, traditional rulers, and ordinary citizens who dared to dissent or simply go about their lives – became an alarming trend. As one commentator bitterly noted, “Igbo are killing Igbo. An Igbo like you is most likely to be killed by another Igbo,” encapsulating the tragic irony of a liberation movement turning its guns inward.

Kanu’s radicalization of the struggle also dragged the South-East into broader national turmoil. Nigerian authorities accuse IPOB of hijacking the EndSARS protests of October 2020 – a nationwide youth movement against police brutality – in order to advance a separatist agenda. During those chaotic weeks, hoodlums (whom the government and some witnesses claim were incited by IPOB’s broadcasts) attacked symbols of the Nigerian state, especially in Lagos and parts of the South-East. The aftermath was devastating: at least 164 police stations were destroyed across the country and 233 security personnel were killed during the unrest, according to an official report by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS). In Lagos alone – far from Igboland – dozens of police precincts were torched amid an orgy of rioting and looting. A DSS operative testified in court that Nnamdi Kanu’s inflammatory radio broadcasts directly spurred protesters to attack security forces and facilities, allegedly including instructions on how to make improvised weapons. Kanu, for his part, was recorded on air calling the Nigerian government a tyrannical occupying force and urging youths to “take down” any “enemy” in police or army uniform. “Biafraland will be a graveyard for the Nigerian Army… The mother of all wars is going to come,” he boasted in one late-October 2020 broadcast. Such rhetoric, fanning the flames of insurrection, prompted the Nigerian government to proscribe IPOB as a terrorist organization in 2017 and launch military operations (like the infamous Operation Python Dance) to crush its networks.

In 2021, Kanu’s saga took another dramatic turn: he was intercepted abroad (reportedly in Kenya) by Nigerian authorities and extradited back to Nigeria to face trial on terrorism and treason charges. His arrest left a leadership vacuum in IPOB’s ranks, and into that void stepped Simon Ekpa, a Finland-based disciple of Kanu. Ekpa declared himself the new voice of the Biafra struggle and doubled down on violent messaging. Under his faction (often dubbed the “Autopilot” IPOB because it operates independently of IPOB’s main hierarchy), the climate of fear in Igboland worsened. Ekpa’s social media posts, much like his mentor’s, glorified attacks on Nigerian security personnel – referring to them as “terrorists” and urging their elimination. According to the Associated Press, Ekpa’s faction of IPOB has been “allegedly responsible for killings and abductions of hundreds of people” in Nigeria’s South-East. By 2023, nearly every week brought reports of assassination of politicians, beheadings of perceived collaborators, and deadly raids on police stations and electoral offices in the region – acts blamed on IPOB militants or their offshoots. Perhaps most insidiously, the violence and enforced anarchy have been devastating Igbo livelihoods. Markets cannot open on Monday or any day IPOB declares a lockdown; transporters and traders live in perpetual fear. As one sobering analysis put it, while IPOB claims to be fighting for Igbo freedom, their methods have made “Biafra land” itself a theater of chaos and bloodshed, rolling back the region’s economic and social development by years.

It is an awful irony that in pursuing “liberation” through brute force, Kanu and Ekpa have harmed the very people they profess to defend. The blood of innocent Igbo sons and daughters, security personnel, and bystanders now stains the cause. Even within the pro-Biafra camp, some have begun to question this nihilistic turn. IPOB’s original premise – to protect Igbo lives from external threats – rings hollow when “the ESN, rather than kill [hostile outsiders]… killed prominent Igbo men and women”, as one analysis noted, such that “it has been difficult to estimate” whether more Igbo have died at the hands of their supposed protectors than from any outside enemy. The once-proud motto that “Igbo enwe eze” (Igbos have no king) – indicating a democratic spirit – seems to have been perverted into a leaderless chaos where guns, not consensus, rule. As a result of this self-inflicted violence, the Igbo struggle that once elicited sympathy (due to the undeniable injustices of the past) now increasingly attracts condemnation and fatigue. When Kanu thundered that “Nobody on this earth can stop Biafra,” painting himself as an infallible “Oracle”, he not only challenged Nigeria – he also effectively sidelined the voices of Igbo elders and statesmen. This attitude bred a perilous dynamic in which many Igbo youth came to heed only the edicts of their hotheaded liberators, dismissing more measured counsel as cowardice or betrayal.

Indeed, the Igbo intelligentsia and political elites were caught in a bind by IPOB’s rise. Initially many were silent or ambivalent, perhaps not wanting to be seen as opposing the popular cause of their people. But as IPOB’s excesses grew, some prominent Igbo stepped forward to call for restraint and a return to reason. In July 2017, for instance, the venerable apex Igbo socio-cultural organization Ohanaeze Ndigbo, led by Chief John Nwodo, publicly denounced Kanu’s approach. Nwodo chided IPOB’s leader for his combative pronouncements, stating that “Statements of the kind credited to Nnamdi Kanu are provocative, misleading and unproductive… our language must be civil, respectful and lead to consensus building.”. He urged that the pursuit of Igbo interests be carried out within the framework of a united Nigeria, through negotiation and constitutional means rather than by alienating other groups. Similarly, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) – a political party with Igbo support – implored Kanu to abandon the path of confrontation, describing his call to boycott an important regional election as “irresponsible and devoid of intellectual focus” and warning him to “drop [his] ‘emperor’ perception” of himself. These were stark words, effectively accusing Kanu of behaving like a megalomaniac who was undermining democracy in Igboland.

Tragically, such voices of wisdom were largely drowned out at the height of IPOB’s influence. The educated Igbo professionals, the clergy, the traditional rulers – many were cowed into silence or sidelined by the frenzied momentum of Kanu’s movement. As one northern columnist cynically observed, “the Igbo leadership has been complicit in the wealth-induced loudness, brash arrogance, insulting and condescending conduct of Igbos in relation with their host communities”, implying that Igbo elites had stood by as a new culture of chest-thumping and vitriol overtook Igbo youth. Whether or not one agrees fully with that harsh assessment, it is evident that internal Igbo consensus collapsed: moderates lost credibility, radicals took center stage. This internal schism was precisely what the Nigerian state exploited to isolate the secessionists. In late 2017, after the Northern youths issued an infamous “quit notice” to Igbos (essentially daring them to leave the North and go have their Biafra), Igbo political and opinion leaders hastily convened and repudiated IPOB’s agenda, “unequivocally denounc[ing] Biafra and pledg[ing] their allegiance to a united, indivisible Nigeria.” This public surrender – humiliating as it was for the IPOB rank-and-file – was driven by the realization among elders that Kanu’s intransigence was courting disaster for all Igbos. As The Nation newspaper noted, “the secessionists [had] shut down the entire Southeast” with illegal curfews and were openly challenging constituted authority, and thus had to be cut loose for the greater good. Essentially, Igbo leaders had to “eat the humble pie” and rein Kanu in before he led their youth off a cliff.

In the end, Kanu’s bravado did meet a comeuppance: he is now in custody, his trial ongoing, and his once-unquestioned grip on the movement loosened by factionalism. But the damage done – in lives lost, in social fabric torn, in trust squandered – will take years to heal. The episode stands as a stark reminder of the dangers of allowing “hot-headed youths” with no clear grasp of participatory democracy to become the tribunes of a people’s destiny. As one scathing commentary in The Guardian put it, it is “unfortunate that the only visible credential that Kanu is parading is his emotion and sentiment and yet, a whole race is leaving her life and future to a driver who has no driver’s license.” The writer laments that such a “political toddler” with an “empty sense of history” was able to play a major role in Igbo affairs simply because the real leaders failed to step up in time. This critique, dripping with anguish, encapsulates the core tragedy: the abdication of responsible leadership in favor of rabble-rousing populism.

Republicanism Lost: The Irony of Igbo Leadership Culture

It is deeply ironic that the Igbo, a people whose pre-colonial social structure was famously acephalous and republican, have in recent times rallied around central commanding figures in quasi-authoritarian movements. Historically, Igbo society was characterized by decentralized governance: village assemblies (the “Ama Ala” or town meetings of elders and titled men) made decisions by consensus, and the Igbo maxim “Igbo enwe eze” (“the Igbo have no king”) reflected a cultural aversion to absolute authority. In the 19th century, when British colonizers tried to impose “Warrant Chiefs” on Igbo communities, they met fierce resistance precisely because Igbo political culture valued broad-based decision-making and diffused power. Yet, fast forward to the late 20th and early 21st century, and we see this same society repeatedly placing its hopes in one-man saviors – be it Ojukwu, Uwazuruike, or Kanu – often with near-fanatical devotion. This marks a paradoxical shift from collectivism to a cult of personality.

Several factors help explain this transformation. The devastation of the Biafran War decapitated much of the older Igbo leadership and traumatized the collective psyche. In the post-war years, Igbos found themselves politically sidelined in a Nigeria now dominated by other ethnic blocs. A sense of collective victimhood made them yearn for a strong champion who could articulate their grievances on the national stage. Ojukwu was the first to fill that role, and long after the war he remained the closest thing the Igbo had to a national figurehead (even his detractors addressed him as “Eze Igbo Gburugburu”, roughly “Generalissimo of all Igbo”). The generation that came of age after Biafra grew up with a narrative of persecution and lost glory, which made them susceptible to romantic visions of redemptive leadership.

In a healthy scenario, that energy could have been channeled into democratic political engagement – for instance, working through parties, forging cross-ethnic alliances, and negotiating for power within Nigeria. Some Igbo did exactly that, rising in business, academia, and government ranks. But a significant segment of Igbo youth felt alienated from the Nigerian project. To them, periodic episodes like the annulment of an Igbo vice-presidential victory in 1993, or pogroms against Igbos in the North (as in Kano in the 1980s and 2000s), or even cultural slights, all reinforced a siege mentality. This mentality fed the allure of separatism and made simplistic, strongman solutions attractive. The demagogues – often wielding microphone or camera – offered easy answers: “We’ll break away and all will be well. Follow me.” It was a message that promised dignity and pride, without necessarily detailing the complexities ahead.

However, the embrace of authoritarian styles by Igbo movements also betrays a loss of faith in their own traditional participatory ethos. Perhaps in the urgency of claiming rights they felt were denied, they thought democracy too slow or consensus too elusive; thus, the quickest route was to vest authority in a single, decisive leader. This is a dangerous departure, for it sidelines the plurality of voices that enrich decision-making. It is telling that in all three secessionist episodes, the voices of moderation were drowned out until it was almost too late. During the Biafran War, older statesmen like Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (Nigeria’s first President and an Igbo) counseled against secession, advocating instead for negotiation; he was ignored. The celebrated Igbo apprenticeship system (“Igba boi”), wherein teenagers forego higher education to learn a trade under a master and eventually receive seed capital to start their own business, has produced countless millionaires and is praised as a model of grassroots empowerment. But the flip side is that it has also fostered a culture where youths may see schooling as dispensable, where the patience to climb the ladder in professions or public service wears thin, and where those who “hustle” and make quick money in trading or even less savory ventures are venerated as role models.

In Igboland today, it is not uncommon to hear maxims like “ego ji ike” (money is power) or “onye nna ya na ego bu nna ya ukwu” (he who has money is his own big man). Social status is often pegged to one’s wealth above all else. This has implications for leadership. Those with stupendous wealth – regardless of how they obtained it or their level of education – wield significant influence in their communities, far more than the learned school principal or the community doctor. Visibility is equated with importance, ostentation is mistaken for substance. In politics, this translates to a focus on cash and clout rather than ideas or coalition-building. Igbo billionaires might fund political campaigns, but less attention is paid to developing long-term strategies or think-tanks to navigate Nigeria’s complex polity. The notion of “trading as entrepreneurship, wealth as power, visibility as presence” – in the words of one critic – has taken root, meaning that if a young man drives a flashy car and throws money around, he is automatically accorded respect and even leadership, whereas an elder with a humble pension and a library of knowledge might be sidelined. This inversion of values worries many Igbo thinkers, who fear that the “wisdom of the elders” – traditionally revered in Igbo culture – is being lost in the din of loud, brash new money.

But beyond apportioning blame, the Igbo must collectively confront the deeper issues these cycles reveal. How did the “leaderless” Igbo come to crave singular leaders? Why have the virtues of participatory democracy, consensus, and strategic compromise – which underpin both traditional Igbo governance and successful modern politics – taken a backseat to brinksmanship and brinksmanship? Why are the educated and enlightened voices not steering the conversations, while populist sloganeering holds sway? These are uncomfortable questions, yet answering them is crucial for the Igbo to break free from what one writer called the “misadventure” of repeating history.

It bears emphasizing that youth are the lifeblood of any society – their energy and idealism fuel progress. The Igbos are no exception; indeed, much of Igbo society’s entrepreneurial vibrancy comes from young risk-takers. But when youthful energy is not guided by wisdom and tempered by foresight, it can become a double-edged sword. In Igboland’s recent case, the sword often swung inward. The challenge now is for the Igbo to rediscover equilibrium between youth and elders, between passion and prudence. The elders must not abdicate their role; they should actively engage with the younger generation, offering guidance but also listening to their frustrations to channel them constructively. Conversely, the youths must learn that “ego (money) is not everything,” and that there is much to gain from the knowledge of history and the counsel of those who walked the path before.

The current unpopular standing of Igbos in parts of Nigeria and Africa can yet be redeemed. Igbos remain indispensable to Nigeria’s economic and cultural mosaic – their talents too evident to be written off. But reputation is a function of behavior and engagement. Going forward, building bridges will be more effective than burning them. The Igbos will need to invest in the slow, patient work of alliance-building: reaching out to other ethnic groups not with claims of superiority or ultimatums, but with humility and partnership in mind. They will need to participate in Nigerian affairs not as perpetual dissidents but as stakeholders willing to compromise for collective gains. This does not mean abandoning the fight against genuine injustices – far from it. And that people’s future in Nigeria will depend not on teenage fantasy or militant diktat, but on mature leadership, inter-ethnic friendship, and a reawakening of the best of Igbo values: resilience paired with respect, ambition leavened by wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to “nje cooperative” – cooperative progress – in a country where every group must find its place through dialogue and mutual understanding.

The time to break the cycle is at hand – lest the Igbo, “heroic tribe” though they are, find themselves consigned to a perpetual role of tragic heroes in the annals of Nigeria: brave, bold, but repeatedly broken by the weight of avoidable misadventures. It is a fate unworthy of their potential. It is a fate they have the power to change.
